The Swan, Station Road, Bampton, Devon , EX16 9NG

This whitewashed pub has a traditional feel, with wood

panelling, window seats and an oak bar. Black ceiling beams

add to its sense of history, along with two large fireplaces

with wood-burning stoves. Local produce is used to create

pub classics, such as Sausages and Mash, Cod and Chips,

pies and Grilled Rump Steak. For the more adventurous, the

menu includes starters such as Goat’s Cheese Panna Cotta

with Roasted Thyme, Peach, Candied Walnuts, Honey and

Truffle Dressing, and Wild Sea Trout cured in Wicked Wolf

Gin with Grapefruit. Follow it up with Steak and Kidney and

Bevy Ale Suet Pudding or Spiced Rump of Exmoor Lamb.

Desserts include White Chocolate Cheesecake with Peanut

Butter Ice Cream and Peanut Brittle. Yum.

If you like a bit of celebrity with

your lunch, head to The Kentish

Hare. It’s run by celebrity chefs

and brothers, Chris and James

Tanner, who have appeared

regularly on TV. The award-

winning pub looks just as good

on the outside as it does inside,

with smart weatherboarding and

a lovely suntrap garden. It has

has two bar-come-lounge areas,

plus a restaurant in a large

vaulted conservatory with an

open kitchen. The bar menu

features Macaroni Cheese, Fish

& Chips and Sausages with

Creamed Mash and Onion

Gravy, plus a selection of

burgers. The main menu offers

treats such as Creedy Carver

Duck Breast with Confit Leg

Spring Roll, Potato Terrine and

Cherry Mustard and Roast Lamb

Rump with Lamb Bacon,

Caramelised Onion and Salsify.
